About This Experience
The 'Whiskey Route' - a popular, scenic route known for better acclimatization ('climb high, sleep low'). Accommodation is in tents. Approaches from the southwest.
Trek through lush tropical rainforest with colobus monkeys and exotic bird species. The forest is often misty, creating an ethereal atmosphere. Altitude: 1,790m to 3,010m. 5-7 hours hiking.
Emerge from the forest into open moorland with giant heather and groundsel plants. Stunning views of Kibo peak on clear days. Altitude: 3,010m to 3,845m. 4-6 hours.
Critical acclimatization day following the 'climb high, sleep low' principle. Ascend to Lava Tower at 4,640m, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,960m. You may experience altitude effects at the tower - this is normal and part of the acclimatization process. 6-8 hours.
Tackle the famous Barranco Wall - a rewarding scramble requiring hands and feet. Despite looking intimidating, most trekkers manage it well. Continue through the Karanga Valley. Altitude: 3,960m to 4,035m. 4-5 hours.
Traverse alpine desert towards base camp. The landscape is stark and lunar-like. Early rest and preparation for the midnight summit attempt. Altitude: 4,035m to 4,640m. 3-4 hours.
Summit attempt begins around midnight. Cross the crater rim at Stella Point (5,756m) before sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the Roof of Africa. Descend all the way to Mweka Camp. 12-16 hours total, the most physically and mentally demanding day.
Final descent through lush rainforest. Receive summit certificates at Mweka Gate. Transfer to Arusha for celebration. Altitude: 3,080m to 1,630m. 3-4 hours.
